Jannis Varelas

Jannis Varelas was born in Athens in 1977. He lives and works in Vienna and Athens. He is a graduate of the Fine Arts and the Royal College of Art in London. In 1007 he participated in the 1st Athens Biennial “Destroy Athens” that was curated by Xenia Kalpaktsoglou, Poka Yio and Augstine Zenakos. In 2008 he participated with four large scale works in the New Orleans Biennial that was curated by Dan Cameron. In 2009 work by Varelas were included in the exhibition Skin Fruit: Selections from The Dakis Joannou Collection, curated by Jeff Koons, in the New Museum, New York and in the exhibition Lebt und arbeitet in Wien III: Stars in a Plastic Bag, in Kunsthalle Wien, curated by Xenia Kalpaktzoglou, Raphaela Platow, Olga Sviblova and Angela Stief. In December 2010 he participated in the Cairo Biennial. In 2011, he was nominated for the DESTE prize, the exhibition of which was presented at the Museum of Cycladic Art in Athens. His solo exhibition at the Contemporary Art Center of Cincinnati in Ohio is due to open next spring. In 2012 Jannis Varelas will also participate in the exhibition "The Power of Paper" with works from the Saatchi Collection at Saatchi Gallery in London. Jannis Varelas is represented by The Breeder, Athens and Galerie Krinzinger, Vienna.
